Speed, accuracy, repeatability: VICIVISION optical measurement revolutionises production
As a leading global supplier of complex components and sub-assemblies to the aerospace and defence sectors, Benham Precision Engineering has always placed quality at the heart of its operations.
This commitment to excellence has been a driving force behind the company’s continued success and, in recent years, has led to significant investment in its inspection capabilities. Today, Benham operates three VICIVISION optical, non-contact measurement systems across its two facilities, taking its metrology capabilities to a whole new level.
A reliable solution for complex components
Benham Precision Engineering manufactures medium to high-complexity components, including manifolds, bodies, cases and castings, primarily for the aerospace and defence industries.
Working with tolerances below 10 microns requires measurement technology capable of delivering the same level of precision and consistency as the company’s machining processes.
“We decided to make the investment into our first VICIVISION machine and we’ve subsequently gone on to purchase a further two machines. What VICIVISION has provided as a non-contact measurement solution is a reliable, repeatable and accurate measurement facility for a number of our parts.”
For Benham, speed, repeatability and accuracy were therefore three essential requirements when selecting its measurement technology.
From multiple inspection methods to results in seconds
The introduction of VICIVISION has completely revolutionised the way components are inspected at Benham.
Processes that previously required several different instruments, including micrometers, height gauges and shadowgraphs, can now be combined into a single optical measurement process.
“Previously, we would be utilising micrometers, height gauges and shadowgraphs to check components. Now we’re capturing all of that within 30 seconds to a minute on the VICIVISION.”
The benefits were immediate. Inspection rates increased rapidly, helping Benham streamline its production processes and reduce lead times for its customers.
This is particularly important in industries where both delivery performance and uncompromising quality are essential. Many of the components manufactured by Benham are critical to flight and safety, making accurate and reliable verification a fundamental part of the production process.
Innovation and productivity with VICIVISION
VICIVISION systems are now an integral part of Benham’s production environment, where they are used not only for inspection but also as production aids.
Looking ahead, the company plans to integrate Prolink software with its VICIVISION systems, providing operators with real-time measurement data directly at their workstations.
For Benham, continued investment in technology, people and processes will remain central to increasing productivity and supporting future growth.
“The future looks very promising for Benham as we continue to invest in technology, people and processes. The use of optical measurement equipment will be a key part of that.”
Having experienced the capabilities of VICIVISION technology first-hand, Benham sees optical measurement as a sound investment that has enabled the business to improve productivity, strengthen quality control and take its manufacturing capabilities to the next level.
